How to convert a video to MP4
- Choose the file. The tool reads its format, resolution and length so you can see what you are converting.
- Pick a method. Automatic keeps the original picture and sound when the file already uses MP4-friendly codecs, which is fast and lossless. Otherwise it re-encodes to H.264 video and AAC audio.
- Select Convert to MP4. You can cancel at any time.
- Play the result in the preview, then download it.
YouTube to MP4: what works
YouTube’s Terms of Service allow you to access content only as the service enables it, for example through playback or embeds. They do not allow downloading videos with third-party tools. For that reason yt2mp4 does not fetch videos from YouTube links.
There are legitimate routes to an MP4:
- Your own uploads. YouTube Studio lets you download videos you uploaded. See the steps.
- YouTube Premium. You can save videos for offline viewing, but they play only inside the YouTube app. They are not exported as MP4 files.
- Files from the creator. If a creator or client sends you the source file, convert it here.

Questions
Can I paste a YouTube link and get an MP4?
No. This site does not download from YouTube. Use the official routes above, or convert a file you already have.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The converter runs in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The first visit downloads the converter code (about 31 MB); your browser then caches it.
Will converting reduce quality?
Not when the tool can copy the streams, which only changes the container. When it has to re-encode, some quality loss is unavoidable; the High setting keeps more detail at the cost of a larger file.
Why is conversion slow?
Browsers cannot use your graphics hardware for this encoder, so re-encoding is slower than desktop apps. Choose Automatic and, if the file allows it, the tool will copy the streams instead.
Does it work on phones?
It can, for smaller files. Phones give web pages far less memory than computers, so large videos may fail. See troubleshooting.
